Introducing the Race to College Speaker Series, BRT Group Scholarship

Posted by Breton on July 30, 2009

Inspired by the team and watching the kids of PVIXC - who had never before really considered running in college – start to look at college destinations, Coach Bonnette realized that there was an opportunity to bring the best runners, coaches, financial aid officers, medical specialists, and so on from around the area in to educate on the areas of the college selection process that I and many others might know very little about. With help from Merrill Lynch and the Bonnette Ross Tropea Group (my “dayjob” - so to speak - as a finanical advisor), we were able to put together what we think will be a valuable and informative speaker series. Some main speakers include Olympians Adrian Blincoe (assistant coach for Villanova) and Erin Donohue (assistant coach for Philadelphia University) along with respected men’s and women’s college coaches in the area, La Salle’s Charles Torpey, UPenn’s Eric Bonnette, Widener’s Vince Touey, Rider’s Bob Hamer, TCNJ’s Philip Jennings, and others. We will also have Mark Kemenosh and Molly Phillips, both sports chiropractors that specialize in the treatment of running-related injuries. To address any financial concerns, we plan to have financial aid officers and admission officers from various local universities including La Salle, Bryn Mawr, UPenn, etc. The series looks to provide both the student-athlete and parents of the student-athlete with first-hand accounts of what to expect during the ‘Race to College’ along with an open, intimate forum with which to get answers and ask questions. The series is open to any South Jersey XC runner, their parents, and any friends that may contemplate running in college one day.

Along with that, the Bonnette Ross Tropea Group – a fan and supporter of South Jersey XC throughout the years – plans to offer a scholarship (the Bonnette Ross Tropea Group scholarship) which will award a boy and girl XC participant $1,000 towards their respective higher education. All of the information and application regarding that can be accessed through the “Scholarship” tab at the top of this page.

Any questions and comments can be directed to Coach Bonnette, e-mail to the right of this page.

Open House Reminder, Etc.

Posted by Breton on July 26, 2009

REMINDER: Paul VI OPEN HOUSE tonight! Thursday, 11/19. Details can be found at www.pvihs.org.

I will have a full recap up of the season once all is digested – probably after the Thanksgiving Break. All in all, it was a fairly successful year with some huge highlights and clear ups and downs. That is cross country and that is why we love this sport. We have three seniors that have one more race remaining – Foot Locker Northeast on November 28th! Good luck to Mike Rankin, Brian Walter, and Rich McKean as they prepare for that race. All three got off to a nice start with a mile time trial this past Tuesday with Mike grabbing a PR of almost 5 seconds at 4:25!

HAWK HARRIER XC Camp: Who’s Goin’?

Posted by Breton on July 24, 2009

Please let me know in the Comments section whether or not you have signed up! For those interested in going, all information and a registration form can be found at the HAWK HARRIER XC CAMP website. Once again, the camp is Sunday, August 23 to Friday, August 28th. Held in Darlington, MD, you will have hills, scenic trails, long runs, and some of the best runners in NJ to train with. We will leave for camp around 8:30-9am Sunday morning. The camp is run by former Paul VI head cross country coach and current Saint Joseph’s XC coach Mike Glavin. Required Forms can be found here. If you have any questions, post them here or ask Coach.

Chime in if you’re heading to the Hawk Harrier Camp (we need a head count!). Also, keep an out for some information on that speakers series I was telling you about…keep these dates open, though, Sept 22nd, Oct 6th, and Nov 10th.

Slipped my mind…

Posted by Breton on July 16, 2009

Somehow I neglected to let everyone know about one major detail…

Senior Mike Rankin and junior Tom Hoban have been announced as this season’s captains! Mike has steadily grown into a leadership role – first by example and now as a vocal leader. Tom has had a lot of responsibility put on his shoulders right from the start of his freshman season. Now a junior, he is a seasoned veteran on and off the course.

Please join me in congratulating these two as they prepare to make the 2009-2010 the most impressive season Paul VI XC has had in a long time.
